Sunday morning was a good time to linger in bed, exploring and experimenting, ignoring the clock moving toward the end of their weekend. This time they made certain the “Do Not Disturb” card was hanging outside on the doorknob. Finally, they could put it off no longer: it was time to pack and check out.

Claire headed for the shower first. “Give me a few minutes, then come wash my back,” she said. When Hank joined her in the little shower stall, the stream of hot water felt good against his skin. They washed their bodies until the small bar of Travelodge soap was nearly gone.

They timed their departure from Sacramento carefully to be in Fairfield in time for the bus to Vallejo. They talked and laughed about the events of the weekend, both of them a little amazed that it had gone according to plan. The closer they came to Fairfield, the more serious the conversation became.

“Hank, I know I’m going to end up pregnant from this.”

“You don’t know that. How could you know?”

“I just know. I have that feeling.”

“Women’s intuition?”

“Don’t laugh at me! Don’t you think it’s possible?”

“Of course it’s possible, but how can you say that you know?”

“For one thing, it’s the right time of month for me. For another, we didn’t use any protection most of the time.” She was right about that. Hank had brought along a supply of condoms, and even used a few. But for the most part their lovemaking was spontaneous and unprotected. “What would we do if I was pregnant?”

“Geez, I don’t know, Claire. You know I’ve got to decide on scholarship offers, and then four years of college and football—

somewhere. I’m not sure where yet.”

He went on, but it was not what Claire wanted to hear. She knew what was at stake for Hank’s future and knew what that meant for her as well, but four years—or more—was beyond what she could deal with right now. She grew very quiet as they approached the bus station in Fairfield.
